Information is available in many forms. However, digital media is proving an important method of accessing it. Also this media lends very easily to processing it.

Documents can be generated in many ways and many different formats. For e-books, one of the popular format is PDF.

How do we convert a web-page to a pdf document.
One of the ways is to use a CutePDF driver and then print to a file.

Online collaboration
Different people have different levels of knowledge and understanding. Also, we can safely say that nobody knows everything of everything. So the best way to share information and know-how is through a Wiki.

Look here for creating your own wiki. Someday I will have mine :)

Digital Photography

I am really mesmerized by the possibilities that digital photography has to offer. I have a Canon A75 and I am going to have tonnes of fun with this.

Yesterday got bit of a scare. I had taken my A75 for clicking some photos. Everything was fine
until I went into a cold room to click a photo of the rack of equipments. I found that the camera
display would go blank. It only operated in display mode. Panic set in since I did not even use
my camera so far and if it had to konk now..

Anways since the display mode was working, there was hope. At least I can view pictures! What pay > 15K Rs. to view pictures? Now the engineer in me jumped to solve this issues. Tried re-booting it to start with ;-). (That is a common solution at the company where I develop network drivers.. uh oh!)

Tried several things still could not get the camera to operate in record mode. Cursed my luck and went back to work, trifle disappointed. Searched through the camera manuals and online groups to see if someone ever faced similar issues. Hit couple of things, but not exactly same. Read somewhere that the battery performance goes down in cold temperatures. Decided to try
something .. tried to warm up the battery. Tried one more time to power on the camera. Thankfully now the camera muttered that the battery is low. Relieved, tried the alkaline batteries that came with the camera and found that the camera is okay.. hurray! So look forward to some clicking..

BPDUs

IEEE STP BPDU frame format

I've been working with this stuff lately. I find it interesting how things have evolved in networking. You can interpret certain things in a certain ways only otherwise the meaning
changes.

Here we have the IEEE STP BPDU packet encapsulated in a SNAP header.

The Destination Address on the ethernet frame identifies who in the broadcast media will receive the packet.

The MAC adress themselves are allocated by some bodies:
IANA has a list.
For multicast MAC address, refer to the list at Caverbear

Specific MACs are here:

01-00-0C-CC-CC-CC -802- CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol), VTP (Virtual Trunking Protocol)
01-00-0C-CC-CC-CD Cisco PVST+ protocol
01-80-C2-00-00-00 -802- Spanning tree (for bridges)
01-80-C2-00-00-01
to
01-80-C2-00-00-0F -802- 802.1 alternate Spanning multicast

People Management

"Our greatest resources are our people." We see lot of such catchwords being used;
but in reality sometimes, there are disgruntled folks wanting to leave the next
available opportunity.

What is important to create a sense of ownership and pride in the employees. And
give them opportunities to challenge their skills, a fair recognition system and a way
to channelize their aspirations.

Very often, leaders do not know what is going to come next. It is important to know
the skills of team members and seek future opportunities in area they can grow.

Pep Talk
Give some pep talk to folks once in a while. Give them a vision and sell them on a dream. Then leave them to do their work do not micromanage.

I think creating a friendly atmosphere is very important in keeping the team together to weather all the storms. Participate actively in knowing the team members by their first names and their family. Know their hobbies and stuff which they are good at and love to do. Sometimes, the work might involve where such skills may be needed and people might enthusiastically take it up.

Vacation in Goa

Sunset @ Panjim, Goa Posted by Hello

This was taken from the boat cruise. There was a small cultural
program too on top of the boat. Do not of pictures that though.

I did not have a digital camera at that point of time 17Feb2004.
It was our anniversary ;-). The picture was developed and
then scanned.

And with this I have successfully started my blog and the
photoblog too!
